The decision to get pregnant is an important time for any woman. Ideally, it is best to schedule a visit with me as your midwife before you get pregnant, for what is known as "preconception counseling" or pregnancy planning. During this time I can identify any health conditions or risk factors that could affect you or your baby during pregnancy, such as a bad diet, use of substances that could harm your baby, medications that would be dangerous to take during pregnancy, or medical conditions you may have that could have a negative impact on your baby, even before he or she is conceived. I can identify any immunizations that you may need to have prior to conceiving. In addition you can meet with me to discuss your pregnancy plans and address any issues or concerns about pregnancy. I can help you optimize your physical and emotional health and pave the way for a healthy, happy pregnancy prior to conceiving.
Preconception counseling from me would include:
- Physical assessment
- Fertility awareness
- Controlling bad habits and unhealthy lifestyle choices
- Healthy diet
- Prenatal vitamins
- Exercise and fitness
- Stress Relief
I can also answer questions and concerns surrounding prenatal visits, labor, delivery and postpartum care.
As soon as you start thinking about getting pregnant, it is important for you to visit your midwife for preconception counseling.
